Today, 9 Ajaw (February 5, 2012), we launch our new web site with our new name MAM: “Mayas for Ancient Mayan” and “Maya Antiguo para los Mayas.”

2011 saw our transition and change in focus. We no longer emphasize bringing Mayas to the workshops, now we bring the workshops to the Mayas.“ ‘Un pueblo sin historia es como un árbol sin raíces,’ reza el famoso refrán. El día de hoy, 9 Ajaw (5 de febrero de 2012), lanzamos nuestro nuevo sitio de Internet, con nuestro nuevo nombre, MAM: “Maya Antiguo para los Mayas” y también “Mayas for Ancient Mayan.”

El año 2011 fue testigo de nuestra transición y del cambio de nuestra prioridad. Ya no ponemos el énfasis en traer a los mayas a los talleres. Ahora llevamos los talleres a los mayas. Continue reading →

Valladolid workshop with Crisanto and Patricia

In May, 2010, I gave a workshop in Valladolid, Yucatán, at the invitation of FoM colleague Crisanto Kumul. Attending were “high school” students from Crisanto’s home town of Siisbicch’en and university students from UNO (Universidad del Oriente), all speakers of Mayat’aan (Yucateco). The setting was perfect, in an old converted hacienda on the northern outskirts of town. FoM colleague Patricia Martínez Huchim from nearby Tizimin assisted.

Dear colleagues,

Earlier this year (May 2010) I had the absolute thrill of playing ambassador to Belize for Friends of the Maya and opening up Belizean Maya communities to the possibilities of learning hieroglyphic writing and the ancient calendar.

My first stop was University of Belize in Belmopan where I was hosted by Cesar Ross. Cesar took me around campus introducing me to various directors and heads of departments as we worked together to make final arrangements and get the workbooks printed.Estimados colegas:

“A people with no history is like a tree with no roots”, says the famous saying (Marcus Garvey). And this is precisely what epigraphy, archaeology and other associated, auxiliary or inter-related sciences mean for the Maya people. I am not necessarily speaking on behalf of the Maya population at large, but I do believe that I do so for many of them. Epigraphy, together with archaeology, ethnology and anthropology are the sciences that have brought us, the Maya peoples, closer to our ancient History, since they are the disciplines that, together with linguistics, are more closely related to our people and they provide a very important link for the communication and transmission of History, which is a fundamental pillar for knowing any society’s past.

Y eso es precisamente lo que la epigrafía, arqueología, ciencias afines y auxiliares o interrelacionadas significan para el pueblo maya. No hablo necesariamente en nombre de toda la población maya en general, pero considero que si de una gran parte. La epigrafía conjuntamente con la arqueología, etnología y antropología son las ciencia que nos ha acercado más a los pueblos mayas con nuestra historia antigua, puesto que son las   disciplinas, conjuntamente con la lingüística, que tiene más relación con nuestros pueblos, los cuales son un vínculo muy importante para la comunicación y transmisión de la historia, que es un pilar fundamental para conocer el pasado de cualquier sociedad. In April, 2010, I traveled to San Cristobal, Alta Verapaz, to meet with our colleague Romelia Mo’ at her family home there. Together, Romelia and I traveled to nearby Tactic to meet Augusto Tul Rax, President of the Comunidad Linguistica Poqomchi’, a branch of the Academia Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala.Informe desde Verapaz, Guatemala.

For a brief update on one of our colleagues, Raquel Macario could not make it to the Maya Meetings in Antigua this year because of her responsibilities at Tikal where she was directing an excavation crew as part of the PSMAT program (Proyecto de Silvicultura y Manejo del Agua de los Mayas Antiguos de Tikal), sponsored by the University of Cincinnati and run under the direction of Arq. Liwy Grazioso, well-known Guatemalan archaeologist. Raquel’s specific task was tracing a manmade waterway to discover its construction and engineering as part of the larger understanding of Tikal’s water management system during the Classic Period.

Damos esta información sobre una de nuestros colegas, Raquel Macario, quien no pudo asistir a la Reunión Maya de Antigua de este año debido a sus responsabilidades en el sitio de Tikal, en donde se hallaba dirigiendo a un equipo de excavación que forma parte del programa PSMAT (Proyecto de Silvicultura y Manejo del Agua de los Mayas Antiguos de Tikal), patrocinado por la Universidad de Cincinnati y dirigido por la conocida arqueóloga guatemalteca Liwy Grazioso. La tarea específica que estaba llevando a cabo Raquel era seguir un curso de agua artificial, con el fin de exponer su técnica de construcción y los conocimientos de ingeniería empleados en el mismo, como parte de un entendimiento más amplio del sistema de manejo de agua en Tikal durante el período Clásico.
