This workshop on the calendar and numeration in the codices lasted from morning to evening. The participants were twenty-six leaders, men and women from Maya communities of the highlands, who were taking courses for a diploma in Political Formation of Indigenous Leaders from the point of view of the Maya. I was given the opportunity to work with them to develop the theme: the calendar from the codices. Over the course of the workshop I was very pleased to observe that the participants were very energized and interested by the subject, leaving us eager to continue this work at a later date.

Este taller sobre el calendario y los números desde los códices se trabajó desde la mañana hasta en la tarde. Participaron 26 personas que son líderes y lideresas de las comunidades mayas del altiplano que están recibiendo cursos de un diplomado en Formación Política de Líderes y Lideresas Indígenas desde la cosmovisión maya. Se me dio la oportunidad de trabajar con ellos desarrollando el tema del calendario desde los códices. En el transcurso del taller estuvo muy ameno puesto que los participantes estuvieron muy activos y les interesó el tema, quedamos pendientes en seguir trabajando con ellos en fechas posteriores. Sunday, March 22, in the “city hall” of Kikil, in the municipality of Tizimín, Yucatán.

Two workshops of one hour each took place within the setting of a public celebration of a Ch’a Chaak rain ceremony.

Twenty-two children in total attended the workshop, some at 11 a.m., the others at 2:00 p.m.

It was possible to cover the following: numbers, colors, and the cardinal directions.

The organization PRODETUR of Tizimín provided refreshments for the children, as well as pencils and workbooks.

The Foundation Dondé donated backpacks and the children’s version of the Popol Vuh.

Deira Jiménez and her father, a painter, donated fifteen copies of Maya Numbers of Yesterday and Today for the children.

Domingo 22 de marzo, en la comisaría de Kikil, en el municipio de Tizimín, Yucatán.

Dos talleres de una hora, en el marco de una celebración pública de Ch’a Chaak, ceremonia de la lluivia.

Tomaron el taller 22 niños en total; unos a las 11:00 a.m.; y otros, a las 2:00 p.m.

Se pudo enseñar el siguiente: números, colores, y puntos cardinales.

El grupo PRODETUR de Tizimín dio un refrigerio a los niños, así como lápices y cuadernos.

La fundación Dondé donó mochilas y libros del Popol Vuh, versión para niños.

Deira Jiménez y su padre, el pintor plástico donaron 15 ejemplares de Números mayas de ayer y hoy para los niños.

Since initiating our current mini-grant program (maximum $200) in January, we have approved and financed eight new workshops; some recently completed, some taking place at this printing, and some planned for the near future. We also have five additional letters of inquiry that will likely result in grants and workshops.

As the reports and pictures come in from the field, we look forward to printing them in upcoming blogs; but while waiting for the first informes to arrive, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to plot all the workshops that MAM or MAM affiliates have performed up to now, including workshops I have given on behalf of MAM and workshops by our Maya colleagues on their own behalf, in their own or nearby communities.

How gratifying to see such a wide geographical spread, and how instructive to see areas under-served such as Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco, and much of Chiapas. While it may be tempting to congratulate ourselves, better to re-energize our efforts supporting Mayas learning and teaching the glyphs and the calendar. Adelante!

Desde que dimos inicio a nuestro actual programa de mini apoyos (que consisten en el otorgamiento máximo de US$200) en enero, hemos aprobado y financiado ocho nuevos talleres; algunos de ellos estarán llevándose a cabo mientras Uds. leen este boletín y algunos más están planeados para el futuro inmediato. Tenemos también cinco cartas adicionales solicitando apoyo, mismas que probablemente terminen en la concesión de más apoyos y en la realización de más talleres.

Conforme vayan llegando los informes y las fotografías de lo que ocurre en campo tenemos previsto compartirlas con Uds. en blogs futuros, pero mientras esperamos a que lleguen los primeros informes, me pareció un ejercicio interesante identificar los lugares en los que se han llevado a cabo los talleres que MAM o grupos afiliados a MAM han organizado, incluyendo aquellos que he dado yo en nombre de MAM, así como aquellos talleres organizados por colegas mayas por cuenta propia, ya sea en sus propias comunidades o en comunidades cercanas.

¡Es muy gratificante ver la cobertura geográfica que hemos tenido, y muy útil identificar regiones que no han recibido la atención debida, como Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco y gran parte de Chiapas! Aunque es tentador autocongratularnos, lo mejor que podemos hacer es redoblar nuestros esfuerzos para apoyar a la gente maya a aprender y enseñar como funcionan los glifos y el calendario. ¡Adelante!

Dear readers, we have lingered on Santa Eulalia for some time now, this being the fourth and final blog post from there.

In the 1920s, almost a century ago, anthropologists rocked the academic world by discovering the Maya calendar still in use in the remote Cuchumatanes Mountains of Guatelmala, which of course was not news to the Mayas themselves who incorporate the tsolk’in and the year bearers in their daily lives.

Oliver La Farge returned to Santa Eulalia in 1932 to focus specifically on the calendar and bring to the outside world its inner workings and the ways of the people using it.

Queridos lectores: nos hemos detenido en Santa Eulalia ya por bastante tiempo, siendo este el cuarto y último blog enviado desde ahí.

En la década de 1920, hace casi un siglo, los antropólogos causaron una sensación en el mundo académico cuando descubrieron que el calendario maya continuaba utilizándose en las remotas montañas de los Cuchumatanes, en Guatemala; esto, desde luego, no tenía nada de novedoso para los mayas mismos, quienes incorporan al tsolk’in y a los cargadores del año en sus vidas diarias.

The nature of Classic Maya writing was explained using examples taken directly from the stelae. This was followed by study of the calendar system, including the Long Count, the Tzolk’in (Stxolilal Q’inale’ in Q’anjob’al) and the Haab.

To better explain the calendars, exercise activities were done showing how the calendars worked. To understand the Cholq’ij (Tzolk’in) the participants formed two circles, one representing the 20 day-names and the other the numbers 1-13. The idea was the students learned how at the point where the two circles came together they were creating a single date; in effect the students themselves became a living calendar of 260 days!

Se explicó la naturaleza del sistema de escritura maya clásico, utilizando ejemplos tomados directamente de las estelas. Después de esto también se estudio el sistema calendárico, incluyendo la Cuenta Larga, el Tzolk’in (Stxolilal Q’inale’ en Q’anjob’al) y el Hab’il (Haab’).

Para explicar mejor los calendarios se realizaron algunas dinámicas para ejemplificar cómo funcionaban. Para entender mejor el funcionamiento del Cholq’ij (Tzolk’in), se hizo que los participantes formaran dos ruedas: una representando los 20 nombres de los días y otra los números del 1-13. La idea de la dinámica era que los estudiantes aprendieran como ambas ruedas se correspondían para crear una determinada fecha, de esta manera los mismos participantes se convirtieron en un calendario viviente de 260 días.

Happily, the workshop took place on the day 6 Kixkab’ (No’j/Kab’an) and 7 Chinax (Tijax/Etz’nab) (December 8 and 9, 2014). The facilitators were Igor Xoyón (Maya Kaqchikel), Karina Coy (Maya Kaqchikel) and Alejandro Garay of the Sak Chuwen Group, each of whom were participants in the recent International Congress of Maya Epigraphers that took place in Ocosingo, Chiapas.

Although the workshop took place during very cold weather (around 45 degrees F.) the atmosphere was warm and friendly due to the great interest that the almost 40 participants showed, who were constantly asking questions and seeking answers. The workshop began with a short prayer invoking the ancestor Kixkab’, to thank him for the opportunity to learn about the history of the Maya people.

El taller felizmente se pudo realizar los días 6 Kixkab’ (No’j/Kab’an) y 7 Chinax (Tijax/Etz’nab’) (8 y 9 de diciembre de 2014). Como facilitadores para el taller llegaron: Igor Xoyón (Maya Kaqchikel), Karina Coy (Maya Kaqchikel) y Alejandro Garay del Grupo “Sak Chuwen”, todos ellos participantes del pasado Congreso Internacional de Mayistas que se realizó en Ocosingo, Chiapas.

Aunque el taller se realizó en un clima muy  frío (alrededor de 8°C), el ambiente del mismo fue muy cálido y amigable, debido al gran interés que mostraron los casi 40 participantes, que constantemente realizaron preguntas para resolver sus dudas. Jolom Konob’ (Santa Eulalia) in northern Huehuetenango is one of the most important towns of the Q’anjob’al Maya nation. It is also one of the most distant points in the Highlands that one can visit from Guatemala City, more than ten hours by car in the heart of the Cuchumatanes Mountains.

Jolom Konob’ (Santa Eulalia) es uno de los pueblos más importantes de la nación Maya Q’anjob’al del norte de Huehuetenango. Es uno de los puntos más distantes en las tierras altas que se pueden visitar desde la Ciudad de Guatemala, a poco más de 10 horas de camino, en plena Sierra de Los Cuchumatanes.

This month we are presenting a video interview instead of our usual blog entry. John Daigle, who produces the web site http://mayaglypher.com interviewed me at the recent Maya at the Playa Meetings in Palm Coast, Florida. The interview outlines our history and our future trajectory up to the point of our dissolution in 2016.

I apologize to our Spanish-speaking colleagues that this blog is only in English, but it may be worth playing the video to see the pictures. Next month we will return to our bi-lingual format.
