Note from the President: With this blog we mark the close of our 2015 grant season and turn our attention to the 2016 planning efforts for the Third International Congress of Maya Epigraphers, hosted and organized by the Fundación Proyecto Linguistico Francisco Marroquín, or PLFM, in Antigua, Guatemala. We are proud to say we supported thirty-five grass-roots workshops this year.  We will try to put together a statistical overview of this year’s grants in a blog in the near future, with places and languages and numbers of students, etc., but for now, let us enjoy this second workshop by the team of K’anal Akpub’ and Ajpub’ García in Highland Chiapas near the Guatemala border (please see our blog 1 Ajaw 8 Sek, June 29, 2015 for the first workshop and a map).  Thank you for your attention.

Nota del presidente: Con este blog, marcamos el final de nuestra temporada de becas 2015 y dirigimos nuestra atención a los esfuerzos de planificación de 2016 para el Tercer Congreso Internacional de Epigrafistas Maya, alojados y organizadas por la Fundación Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín, o PLFM, en Antigua, Guatemala. Estamos orgullosos de decir que apoyamos treinta y cinco talleres este año. My dearest readers, colleagues, supporters, and donors;

As we enter into our sixth complete tsolk’in (260-day cycle) since launching our new web site with our new name MAM, on this auspicious day 11 Ajaw I introduce you to our next president, Dr. Michael Grofe, Anthropology professor at Sacramento City College in California, USA.

Last year I was planning to phase out MAM, turning our resources over to Maya colleagues to continue their work in their own right, but I have been convinced otherwise by our own board and executive committee, and I see that we should continue as long as our role is purely service-oriented, not leading but being of service, responding to our Maya colleagues’ requirements, financial and academic. Where they take the lead and express a need, we respond.

Estamos ya en nuestro sexto tsolk’in (ciclo de 260 días) desde que se lanzó nuestro nuevo sitio de internet y se presentó nuestro nuevo nombre, MAM, y quiero aprovechar esta propicia fecha 11 Ajaw para presentarles a nuestro nuevo presidente, el Dr. Michael Grofe, profesor de Antropología en la Universidad de la Ciudad de Sacramento, en California, E.U.A.

El año pasado, me encontraba yo planeando finiquitar MAM y hacer entrega de sus recursos a nuestros colegas mayas, con el fin de permitirles continuar con su obra como mejor les pareciera; no obstante, nuestro propio consejo y nuestro comité ejecutivo me convencieron de no hacerlo y ahora creo que debemos seguir con nuestro papel, siempre y cuando éste se oriente a ofrecer nuestros servicios y no tomar posición de liderazgo alguna, sino buscar siempre responder a las necesidades de nuestros colegas mayas, tanto en lo financiero como en lo académico. Maní Workshop: Ts’íib (“Writing”)

Young people from the community of Maní were invited to participate in an epigraphy workshop. The place: U Tuch Lu’um (“naval of the land”), Maní, Yucatan.

Beginning 2 Ix 2 Xul – Ending 6 Etz’nab 6 Xul
(July 13-17, 2015)

This workshop aimed to raise awareness among young people to learn the wisdom of our grandparents, knowing the Maya syllabary, learning about ancient writing, and providing basic tools to start writing and reading ancient inscriptions.

Este taller tuvo como objetivo sensibilizar a los jóvenes a conocer la sabiduría de nuestros abuelos y abuelas, conocer el silabario maya, aprender la forma de escritura antigua y proporcionando las herramientas básicas para empezar a escribir y leer las antiguas inscripciones. Continue reading →

As an addendum to our previous blog about the advanced workshop taught by Nikolai Grube, the Sak Chuwen Group wishes to thank a number of individuals who helped make the workshop a success, names that inadvertently were not mentioned in the last blog, persons without whose help the workshop would not have been possible:

1. Igor Xoyon and Karina Koy for their work giving beginner and intermediate-level workshops that allowed many of the students to participate in the advanced workshop.
2. Alejandro Garay for his superb efforts in coordination and logistics.
3. Antonio Cuxil for offering to serve as tour guide during the visit to the ancient Maya city of Quirigua.

Again, appreciation to the foundation Mayas for Ancient Mayan for the support offered for the teaching of Maya epigraphy and the Maya calendars.

This workshop occurred on March 27, 2015, in the community of San Pedro Cutzán, Suchitepéquez. This event happened with sixty boys and girls of the “basic level,” and among them three teachers.

The majority of the youths are speakers of Maya Tz’utujiil. The themes we focused on were the following: ancient writing, the calendar of 260 days, and the territorial Mesoamerican spaces where Maya cities (archaeological sites) are found today.

Como una adición a nuestro blog anterior sobre el taller avanzado impartido por Nikolai Grube, el Grupo Sak Chuwen desea agradecer a una serie de personas que ayudaron a hacer el taller de un éxito, nombres que inadvertidamente no fueron mencionados en el último blog, personas sin cuya ayuda el taller no habría sido posible. Es necesario mencionar que el taller involucró la colaboración de varias personas que sin su ayuda el taller no hubiera sido posible. Se extiende un especial agradecimiento a las siguientes personas:

1. Igor Xoyon y Karina Koy por su esfuerzo en impartir talleres nivel principiantes e intermedios que permitió a muchos de los estudiantes participar en el taller avanzado.
2. Alejandro Garay por su gran esfuerzo  en la coordinación y logística del taller nivel avanzado.

De nuevo el agradecimiento a la fundación Maya Antiguo para los Mayas por el apoyo brindado en la enseñanza del Tz’iib’ y los calendarios mayas.

Este taller se realizó el 27 Marzo del 2015, en la comunidad de San Pedro Cutzán, Suchitepéquez. Dicha actividad se realizó con 60 alumnas y alumnos de tercer grado del nivel básico, dentro de este grupo 3 maestras.

La mayoría de los jóvenes son hablantes del idioma Maya Tz’utujiil. Los temas que se enfocaron son el siguiente: el ojer tz’iib’, calendario de 260 días, y también los espacios territoriales mesoamericanos, donde actualmente se encuentran las ciudades mayas.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP BY NIKOLAI GRUBE

Introduction

From July 20 to 26, an advanced workshop in Maya epigraphy took place with great success in Guatemala City. The workshop titled “Hieroglyphic Texts and Iconography on Maya Ceramics” was led by Profesor Nikolai Grube from the University of Bonn. The workshop consisted of a series of activities that included lectures by Grube, group exercises, and a visit to various archaeological sites with the goal of reinforcing the knowledge gained during the classes.

The course was given to forty-five Mayan-speaking students from eight language communities. The following describes in more detail the various activities.

En MAM estamos hemos agradecido siempre ser parte de un esfuerzo de equipo. TALLER AVANZADO DE NIKOLAI GRUBE

Introducción

Del 20 al 26 de julio se llevó a cabo exitosamente en la ciudad de Guatemala el taller avanzado de epigrafía Maya. El taller titulado “Textos Jeroglíficos e Iconografía en la Cerámica Maya” fue dictada por el profesor Nikolai Grube de la Universidad de Bonn. El taller combinó una serie de actividades que incluyeron clases magistrales dictadas por el profesor Grube, la realización de ejercicios grupales, y la visita de varios sitios arqueológicos con la finalidad de reforzar los conocimientos adquiridos durante las clases.

Éste curso fue dirigido a 45 estudiantes hablantes de idiomas Mayas quienes pertenecían a 8 comunidades lingüísticas. A continuación se describirán con más detalles dichas actividades. Continue reading →

Maya Epigraphy Workshop forQ’eqchi’ Maya-speaking Teachers

Introduction

In the head town of the municipality of El Estor, Department of Izabal, Guatemala, located in the territory of the Q’eqchi’ Maya people, on the shores of Lake Isabal, a training workshop took place on Maya epigraphy focused toward Q’eqchi’-speaking school teachers, in order to promote the recovery of Maya cultural values, specifically the ancient Maya writing and its application in the school environment.

The activity was developed with the participation of representatives, women and men, from various educational institutions from the northern region of Guatemala. The training workshop came about through the efforts of Victor Maquin, Event Coordinator, who participated in the Second International Congress of Maya Epigraphers in Ocosingo, Chiapas, Mexico, in May, 2014, and as part of the agreement to spread the acquired knowledge from the said international event, and thanks to the help of Dr. Bruce Love, president of the international organization MAM (Maya Antiguo para los Mayas) with headquarters in the United States.

Introducción

En la cabecera municipal de El Estor, departamento de Izabal, República de Guatemala, ubicado en el territorio del Pueblo Maya Q’eqchi’ a orillas del Lago de Izabal, se realizó un Taller de Formación sobre Epigrafía Maya para principiantes enfocado a docentes mayahablantes Q’eqchi’, para promover la recuperación de los valores culturales mayas, específicamente la escritura maya antigua y su aplicación en entornos escolares.

La actividad se desarrolló con la participación de mujeres y hombres representantes de varias instancias educativas de la región norte del país. El Taller de Formación se realizó por iniciativa de Victor Maquin, Coordinador del evento, que participó en el Congreso Segundo Internacional de Epigrafistas Mayas, realizado en Ocosingo, Chiapas, México en el mes de mayo del año 2014 y como parte del compromiso de replicar los conocimientos adquiridos en dicho acontecimiento internacional, gracias al apoyo del Dr. Bruce Love, presidente de la organización internacional MAM (Maya Antiguo para los Mayas) con sede en Estados Unidos.

First, our appreciation to the organization Maya Antiguo para los Mayas (MAM) for promoting and supporting with small grants the fulfillment of these activities of Ojer Tz’ib’ [ancient writing]. With the grain of maize that has been planted now, we are sure to harvest maize of various colors from the teaching of Ojer Tz’ib’. Members of MAM, thank you very much for this contribution to the Tojolab’ales, which was very supportive and very important as it was of great interest to feel and experience a sense of our ancestors.

That is why I, K’anal Ajpub’ (Bertha María Santíz Pérez), on behalf of the people of El Rosario Bahuitz extend our most sincere thanks to all those who struggle every day to share new knowledge (unfortunately many do not know their historical past) and in this way to reflect and raise awareness and regain ancestral history to all those interested, as an example to these children who are the future of tomorrow.

To orient our readers, here is a map of the Tojolabal region, red, on the Guatemala/Chiapas border.

The event took place on February 28, 2105, in the community of El Rosario Bahuitz (place of the hills), in the municipality of Las Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico, with the students of the Escuela Telesecundario Emilio Rabasa Estebanell, where the commissary, in coordination with the committee padres de familia de la comunidad, very kindly gave thanks for bringing a new dynamic to the development of their children, for reclaiming their identity as Maya speakers by means of Ojer Tz’ib and language use in the community.

Primero nuestro agradecimiento a la organización Maya Antiguo para los Mayas (MAM), en promover y apoyar con las pequeñas becas de realización de estas actividades del Ojer Tz’ib’ (Escritura Antigua). Con el grano maíz que se ha sembrado ahora, estamos seguros en cosechar maíz de varios colores desde la enseñanza del Ojer Tz’ib’. Señores del MAM, muchas gracias por este aporte que para los Tojolab’ales fue de gran apoyo y de gran importancia ya que fue de gran interés en sentir y vivir los sentires de nuestro ancestros.

La actividad se llevó a cabo el día 28 de Febrero del 2015 en la comunidad El Rosario Bahuitz (lugar de los cerros), municipio de Las Margaritas, Chiapas, México, con las alumnas y alumnos de la Escuela Telesecundaria Emilio Rabasa Estebanell, donde amablemente el comisariado en coordinación con el comité de padres de familia de la comunidad dieron gracias por llevar una nueva dinámica en la formación de sus hijos, en la reivindicación de la identidad como hablante Mayas, desde el Ojer Tz’ib’ y el uso del idioma de la comunidad. Participants: 35 participants and 2 instructors

The Event

First Part:

The workshop began at 8:00 a.m. with an invocation with the participation of thirty-five persons and two instructors. The participants came from five municipalities of the Department of Alta Verapaz being the following: San Juan Chamelco, Carchá, Cobán, San Cristobal Verapaz, and Tactic; the majority were Q’eqchi’ speakers and some Poqomchi’. The participants were for the most part teachers of various grades and students of teaching for primary schools. It took place on this date taking advantage of the recess for holy week the Wayeb’ celebration that happens in the north region of the country. For this reason the event was divided into two parts, the first being calendrical and the second being about the ancient writing. The first part was taught by Mario Sebastián Caal.

Lugar y sede: Auditorio del Instituto Normal Mixto del Norte “Emilio Rosales Ponce”, Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala

Participantes:35 personas y 2 facilitadores.

Desarrollo

Primera parte:

El taller dio inicio a las 8 horas, con una invocación, con presencia de 35 personas y 2 facilitadores. Los participantes eran provenientes de 5 municipios de Alta Verapaz, siendo éstos: San Juan Chamelco, Carchá, Cobán, San Cristobal Verapaz, Tactic, la mayoría hablantes del idioma Q’eqchi’ y alguno Poqomchi’. Los participantes son en su mayoría maestros de diversos niveles y estudiantes de magisterio infantil. Se realizó en esta fecha aprovechando el receso de semana santa y la celebración de Wayeb’ que se hace en la región norte. Por lo mismo se dividió el evento en dos partes, el primero calendarico y el segundo sobre escritura antigua. La primera parte la desarrolló Mario Sebastián Caal.
