Tojolab’al Students revive Ancient Maya Writing in las Margaritas, Chiapas
On this auspicious day, we celebrate the day 1 Ajaw, the namesake of the Hero Twin Hunahpu in the Popol Vuh, and the day commemorating the rebirth of Venus as Morning Star in the Dresden Codex Venus Table. Hunahpu willingly sacrificed himself in the fires of Xibalbá, and some say he became the sun itself, like the Central Mexican Nanahuatzin, who gives his light and his life so that all things can live—a true act of generosity. Some say he is akin to the self-sacrificing Quetzalcoatl, whose heart becomes the planet Venus, much as the planet itself appears to dive into the fiery sun in the evening sky, only to valiantly reappear several days later as the Morning Star.
While the reappearance of Venus in the morning took place back in March of this year, the brilliant planet is still visible as Morning Star on this day, and we are now just four days from a remarkable total solar eclipse—yet another focus of both the Dresden Venus Table, and the Lunar Table that follows it in that incredible Postclassic document, distilled from many generations of Maya observers. This sophisticated knowledge of astronomy, and the profound, symbolic stories which were used to instruct and educate on multiple levels, are examples of the rich cultural and scientific achievements of the Maya which deserve our deepest respect and recognition.
Knowledge of Maya writing and astronomy was almost completely destroyed by the fires of ignorance some 500 years ago, and for too long it has remained relatively untaught and uncelebrated in classrooms throughout the world—especially in classes of young Maya students. Thankfully, that is all starting to change. We at MAM uphold the importance of celebrating and disseminating the knowledge of the achievements of the Maya past, and helping Maya teachers who are passionately working with their students to help them learn the writing of their ancestors.
In the spirit of generosity, and celebration this month, we report back from the field from Tojolab’al students in las Margaritas, Chiapas with a report from K’anal Ajpub’ Santiz—who likewise takes her namesake from this day! Though this workshop took place almost one year ago, we are still catching up with receiving and publishing reports from some of the thirty mini-grants we have granted over the past year, and we hope to be able to publish as many of these reports as we can to acknowledge the excellent work of as many of our mini-grant recipients as possible.
Furthermore, K’anal Ajpub’ Santiz will be coordinating another pre-Congreso event that we are helping to support, scheduled to take place in Chiapas in September of this year. The purpose of this event will be to work with Chontal, Tzotzil, Tojolob’al, and Tz’eltal speakers who have not yet participated in the revitalization of the hieroglyphic script. Los estudiantes Tojolab’ales reviven la escritura maya antigua en las Margaritas, Chiapas
En este día auspicioso, celebramos el día 1 Ajaw, el homónimo del héroe gemelo Hunahpu en el Popol Vuh, y el día que conmemora el renacimiento de Venus como la Estrella Matutina en la tabla del Venus del Codice Dresde. Hunahpu se sacrificó voluntariamente en los fuegos de Xibalbá, y algunos dicen que se convirtió en el sol mismo, como Nanahuatzin del centro de México, que da su luz y su vida para que todas las cosas puedan vivir, un verdadero acto de generosidad. Algunos dicen que es semejante al sacrificado Quetzalcóatl, cuyo corazón se convierte en el planeta Venus, así como el propio planeta parece sumergirse en el sol ardiente en el cielo de la noche, sólo para reaparecer valientemente varios días después como la Estrella Matutina.
Mientras que la reaparición de Venus en la mañana tuvo lugar en marzo de este año, el planeta brillante todavía es visible como la Estrella Matutina en este día, y ahora estamos a sólo cuatro días de un notable eclipse solar total—un otro enfoque de ambos La Tabla de Venus y la Tabla Lunar que la sigue en ese increíble documento Postclásico, el Codice Dresde, destilado de muchas generaciones de observadores mayas. Este sofisticado conocimiento de la astronomía y las profundas historias simbólicas que se utilizaron para instruir y educar en múltiples niveles son ejemplos de los ricos logros culturales y científicos de los mayas que merecen nuestro más profundo respeto y reconocimiento.
El conocimiento de la escritura maya y la astronomía fue destruido casi por completo por los fuegos de la ignorancia hace unos 500 años, y durante demasiado tiempo no se ha enseñado y ha permanecido relativamente no reconocido en las aulas de todo el mundo-especialmente en las clases de jóvenes estudiantes mayas. Afortunadamente, eso está empezando a cambiar. Nosotros en el MAM mantenemos la importancia de celebrar y difundir el conocimiento de los logros del pasado maya y ayudar a maestros mayas que trabajan apasionadamente con sus estudiantes para ayudarles a aprender la escritura de sus antepasados.
En el espíritu de generosidad y celebración de este mes, reportamos desde el campo a los estudiantes Tojolab’ales en las Margaritas de Chiapas con un informe de K’anal Ajpub’ Santiz—quien también toma su nombre de este día! Aunque este taller se celebró hace casi un año, seguimos recibiendo y publicando informes de algunas de las treinta mini-becas que hemos concedido durante el año pasado, y esperamos poder publicar tantos de estos informes como podemos, reconocer el excelente trabajo de tantos de nuestros beneficiarios como sea posible.
Además, K’anal Ajpub’ Santiz estará coordinando un otro evento previo al Congreso que estamos ayudando a apoyar, programado para tener lugar en Chiapas en septiembre de este año.
