Valladolid workshop with Crisanto and Patricia

In May, 2010, I gave a workshop in Valladolid, Yucatán, at the invitation of FoM colleague Crisanto Kumul. Attending were “high school” students from Crisanto’s home town of Siisbicch’en and university students from UNO (Universidad del Oriente), all speakers of Mayat’aan (Yucateco). The setting was perfect, in an old converted hacienda on the northern outskirts of town. FoM colleague Patricia Martínez Huchim from nearby Tizimin assisted.
- The workbook gave an introduction to the Maya calendar and the Maya Codices. When I called for a break the students would not leave their seats. Instead they used the opportunity to really get into it with the other students.

En el mes de Mayo del 2010, conduje un seminario en Valladolid, Yucatán, por invitación del colega miembro de FoM Crisanto Kumul. Participaron estudiantes de secundaria del pueblo Siisbicche’en en donde vive Crisanto y estudiantes universitarios de la UNO( Universidad del Oriente) todos maya parlantes de Mayat’aan (yucateco). El escenario fue perfecto, localizado en una antigua hacienda en las orillas del norte de la ciudad. Patricia Martínez Huchim, otra colega del FoM originaria de Tizimin, participó también.
- El cuaderno de trabajo ofreció una introducción al calendario y los Códices Mayas.
- Here the assignment is to find the distance numbers in the Yaxchilan hieroglyphic stairway One of Crisanto’s students, María de los Angeles Couo Uc, demonstrated a set of calendar wheels she had invented which she could use to recreate any Calendar Round date by adjusting the Haab and Tsolk’in names and numbers.
- The inner two wheels are the Tsolk’in and the outer two are the Haab.
- Since we were studying Calendar Round dates, I challenged María to recreate one of the CRs from Yaxchilan, 1 Ajaw 13 Xul; which she did.
- During one of the breaks, Patricia shared Maya calendars from Guatemala. She brought these from the PLFM weekend that we had in Antigua in March of the same year. One of the greatest satisfactions of our work is witnessing the interchange between Maya groups that may not otherwise get a chance to connect.
- In the end, as always, a sense of well-being and a spirit of celebration permeated the air, as once again, the living Maya seem so intent on digging into their own past and reading their ancestors’ words in their own language!
- Cuando les di tiempo para un receso, los estudiantes no se movieron de sus asientos. Aprovecharon esta oportunidad para entender los conceptos juntos.
- En este punto la tarea fue, encontrar los números de distancia en la escalera jeroglífica de Yaxchilan.
- Uno de los estudiantes de Crisanto, María de los Angeles Couo Uc, presentó un trabajo que ella inventó en el cual recrea la fecha de la Rueda Calendarica ajustando los números y nombres del Haab y el Tzolk’in. Las ruedas interiores son el Tzolk’in y las ruedas externas representan el Haab.
- Ya que estábamos estudiando las fechas de la Rueda Calendarica, reté a María para recrear uno de las Ruedas Calendaricas de Yaxchilan, 1 Ajaw 13 Xul;
- lo cual hizo.
- Durante los recesos, Patricia compartió los calendarios de Guatemala. Ella los trajo del fin de semana en PLFM que tuvimos en Antigua en Marzo del mismo año. Una de las satisfacciones mas gratas de nuestro trabajo es el intercambio entre los grupos Mayas, que de otra forma, no tienen la oportunidad de conectarse.
- Al final, como siempre, el sentirse bien, y el espíritu de celebración, colmaban el recinto, y de nuevo, los mayas vivientes, con una intención muy fuerte de indagar y escarbar en su propio pasado y leyendo lo que sus antecesores escribieron en su propia lengua.
