In this holiday season, we give thanks for many things, not the least of which are the many good people we have had the privilege and honor to work with as they do the earnest and heartfelt work of reconstructing their understanding of the knowledge and writing of their ancestors. Today, we reach the day 9 Ajaw, which has become a very important day in the organization of all of the previous four Congresos. In keeping with this tradition, the Congreso Organization Team has decided that the Fifth International Congreso on Ojer Maya Tz’ib’ will conclude on this same day, 9 Ajaw, which will take place precisely 260 days from now, from August 18-21, 2020, in Comitán, Chiapas, Mexico. The tentative theme of this next Congreso will be “Writing and Texts on Maya Vases.” We are very excited to help the organizers in their efforts to make this event possible, and we look forward to next year’s fundraising season and the ongoing support of our many friends and generous donors.

Personally, I would also like to give thanks for the good people who help to make this blog possible, despite the many other obligations and endeavors with which we are all engaged. Specifically, I would like to thank Meghan Rubenstein as our Webmaster, Jorge Pérez de Lara as our artist and epigrapher, and the fantastic organization of our Secretary, Lynda Manning Schwartz. I would also like to thank Elaine Schele and Sue Glenn of the MAM Executive Committee for their patience, support, and understanding. I am grateful for all of their dedication and hard work on behalf of our Maya colleagues.

This month, we hear from Milner Pacab Rolando Alcocer who writes to us from the Yucatán, where he carried out a series of introductory hieroglyphic workshops for the children and teachers of Colonia San Camilo de Kanasín during the observance of the International Mother Language Day in February and March of this past year. I think you will all agree that the colorful photographs and drawings are quite wonderful, and a reminder of the important work our Maya colleagues are doing.

I present here the report on the Mayan hieroglyphic writing workshop carried out at the “Felipa Poot” Elementary School, located in the San Camilo neighborhood of Kanasín, Yucatán. Twenty students in grades three to six, as well as 12 teachers who work in the same school, participated. We presented this workshop while International Mother Language Day (February 21) was being celebrated, which in the state of Yucatán is commemorated by activities related to Maya language and culture between February 21 and April 21.

The main purpose of the workshop was to promote knowledge of the basic concepts of the glyphic writing system for students and teachers. Two work sessions took place at the school, one on February 27 and the second on March 13, 2019.

En esta temporada festiva, damos gracias por muchas cosas, entre las cuales se encuentran las buenas personas con quienes hemos tenido el privilegio y el honor de trabajar, ya que hacen el trabajo serio y sincero de reconstruir su comprensión del conocimiento y la escritura de sus antepasados. Hoy llegamos al día 9 Ajaw, que se ha convertido en un día muy importante en la organización de los cuatro congresos anteriores. De acuerdo con esta tradición, el Equipo de Planificación del Congreso ha decidido que el Quinto Congreso Internacional sobre Ojer Maya Tz’ib’ concluirá el mismo día, 9 Ajaw, que tendrá lugar exactamente 260 días a partir de ahora, del 18 al 21 de agosto de 2020, en Comitán, Chiapas, México. El tema tentativo de este próximo Congreso será “Escritura y textos sobre vasos mayas.” Estamos muy entusiasmados de ayudar a los organizadores en sus esfuerzos para hacer posible este evento, y esperamos con ansias la temporada de recaudación de fondos del próximo año y el apoyo continuo de nuestro Muchos amigos y donantes generosos.

Personalmente, también me gustaría agradecer a las buenas personas que ayudan a hacer posible este blog, a pesar de las muchas otras obligaciones y esfuerzos con los que todos estamos comprometidos. Este mes, escuchamos a Milner Pacab Rolando Alcocer, quien nos escribe desde Yucatán, donde él realicé una serie de talleres introductorios de jeroglíficos para los niños y maestros en Colonia San Camilo de Kanasín durante la celebración del Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna en febrero y marzo de este año pasado. Creo que todos estarán de acuerdo en que las coloridas fotografías y dibujos son bastante maravillosos, y un recordatorio del importante trabajo que están haciendo nuestros colegas mayas.

Por medio del presente le doy a conocer el informe del taller de escritura jeroglífica maya realizado en la Escuela Primaria “Felipa Poot”, ubicada en la Colonia San Camilo de Kanasín, Yucatán, con la participación de 20 niños y niñas que cursan sus allí estudios, en los grados de 3° a 6°; así como 12 maestros que también laboran en la misma escuela. Este taller fue impartido en el marco del Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna (21 de febrero), que en el estado de Yucatán se conmemora con actividades alusivas a la lengua y la cultura maya del 21 de febrero al 21 de abril.

El propósito principal fue impulsar el conocimiento de los conceptos básicos del sistema de escritura por medio de glifos entre los alumnos y los maestros, por medio de dos sesiones de trabajo que se llevaron a cabo los días 27 de febrero y 13 de marzo del año en curso, en el local que ocupa la escuela.

Session 1 (February 27, 2019):

This first session began by explaining the objectives of the workshop to participants. A video introduced them to the concept of hieroglyphic writing, identifying some glyphs inherited from our ancestors as evidence of the use of this writing system as well as the way in which their reading, or interpretation, was deciphered.

As a group, participants also met to discuss Harri Kettunen’s syllabary, a document that contains the glyphs that represent the different syllables that can be used to implement this form of writing. They were then introduced to the specific rules for glyphic hyphenation, in correspondence with the glyph syllabary, using techniques for the construction of glyph blocks to transcribe words.

Examples of hyphenation were presented and doubts and questions were answered. Then, the students were asked to divide their names into syllables and begin to design corresponding glyphs blocks to represent them. Teachers were asked to form teams and propose ways to write the name of the school using glyphs. During this activity, questions were answered when they arose about the use of the syllabary and ways to improve their work were offered.

Finally, students were asked to transcribe their glyphs artistically on opaline paper and cardboard and present their work to the group. Teachers in turn presented their proposals for glyphs to represent the name of the school. One design, which was considered aesthetically pleasing, was collectively selected. It was agreed that at the next meeting the school glyph design would be transcribed onto a 2 m x 1 m (6.6 ft x 3.3 ft) cloth and presented at the festival of mother languages that the school would hold in March.

Session 2 (March 13, 2019):

The session began with a reminder of the rules of the syllabary and some exercises on the board that reviewed the hyphenation of proper and common names, the ways in which you can build blocks of glyphs, and the name given to each glyph, depending on placement of the elements within the glyph block.

The students presented the glyphs with their names, and then were asked to complete their artistic designs on opaline paper for presentation at the festival of mother languages. Teachers, meanwhile, began designing the cloth sign showing the name of the school they chose as the best in the previous session, collectively drawing lines and applying color to make it more attractive.

At the end of the session, participants presented their work and provided feedback on the results. They were also reminded to safeguard their products so they could be presented to the community at the correct time.

Festival (March 15, 2019):

As agreed, on this date the school’s festival of mother languages was held with the participation of parents, students, and community members, during which there were many diverse activities related to Maya language and culture. In particular, there was the exhibition of the glyphic work that students and teachers completed in the workshop. They explained their significance to the audience and made them see the importance of their children knowing and appreciating this writing system, our grandparents’ legacy.

Given the enthusiasm observed among teachers, students, and parents, we intend to continue the hieroglyphic writing project during the school year, requesting support from the Ministry of Education for artistically writing glyphs representing the name of this school on its walls.

Sesión 1 (27 de febrero de 2019):

Esta primera sesión, se inició explicando a los participantes los objetivos del taller y se les proyectó un video para que conocieran el concepto de escritura jeroglífica, identifiquen algunos portadores de glifos que nos fueron heredados por nuestros abuelos como evidencias del uso de este sistema de escritura, así como la manera en que se descifró su lectura o interpretación.

También los participantes conocieron y analizaron de manera grupal el Silabario de Harry Kettunen, documento que contiene los glifos que representan las diferentes silabas que permiten poner en práctica esta forma de escritura y conocieron las reglas específicas para la división silábica glífica, su correspondencia con los glifos del silabario, así como las técnicas para la construcción de bloques de glifos al hacer la transcripción de palabras.

Se les presentó algunos ejemplos de división silábica, se atendieron sus dudas  y después a los niños se les solicitó que realicen la división de sus nombres en sílabas y comiencen a diseñar el bloque de glifos correspondiente para representarlo. A los maestros se les pidió que formen equipos y realicen propuestas de escritura del nombre de la escuela por medio de glifos.  Durante esta actividad se les apoyó en las dudas que fueron surgiendo sobre el uso del silabario y se les hicieron comentarios para la mejora de su trabajo.

Finalmente se les pidió que lo transcriban sus glifos de manera artística en papel opalina y en cartulina y que lo presenten al grupo. Los maestros por su parte presentaron sus propuestas de glifos para el nombre de la escuela, se seleccionó de manera colectiva el que se consideró más estético y se acordó que en la siguiente sesión se transcriba en una manta de 2 x 1 metros para presentarlo en el festival de lenguas maternas que la escuela realizará en el mes de marzo.

Sesión 2 (13 de marzo de 2019):

Se inició con un recordatorio de las reglas del silabario y se realizaron en el pizarrón algunos ejercicios de división silábica de nombres propios y comunes, las formas en que se pueden construir los bloques de glifos, así como el nombre que se les da a los glifos dependiendo del lugar que ocupan dentro del bloque.

Los alumnos presentaron los glifos con sus nombres y después se les pidió que realizaran o concluyeran con su diseño artístico en papel opalina para presentarlo en el festival de lenguas maternas. Los maestros por su parte iniciaron con el diseño en manta del nombre de la escuela que eligieron como el mejor en la sesión anterior, de manera colectiva hicieron los trazos y después le dieron color para hacerlo más vistoso.

Al final de la sesión cada participantes presentó su trabajo y se hicieron comentarios de los participantes sobre los resultados. También se les recordó resguardar sus productos para su exposición ante la comunidad en su momento.

Festival (15 de marzo de 2019):

Conforme a lo acordado, en esta fecha se realizó el festival escolar de Lenguas Maternas con la participación de padres, madres de  familia, alumnos y la comunidad en general,  en donde se realizaron diversas actividades alusivas a la lengua y la cultura maya. De manera especial tuvo lugar la exposición de los trabajos que alumnos y maestros realizaron con glifos en el taller. Se les explicó a los asistentes los significados y se les hizo ver la importancia de que sus hijos conozcan y valoren este sistema de escritura que constituye un legado de nuestros abuelos.

Ante el entusiasmo observado ente los docentes, alumnos y padres de familia, se pretende dar continuidad al presente proyecto de escritura jeroglífica durante el ciclo escolar, así como solicitar el apoyo de la Secretaría de Educación para plasmar de manera artística, en los muros de la escuela, los glifos que representan el nombre de este centro educativo.

Lo que hago de su conocimiento, aprovechando la ocasión para reiterar mi agradecimiento a MAM por el apoyo brindado para la realización de este taller.
