“Unity Through Maya Cultural Experience”: Maya Writing and Calendrics with INNO’ON – LA ’OH at the University of Belize

Things have been unusually quiet with us at MAM, since the pandemic has forced us to postpone all of our activities until next year. This summer, we delve into the archive of unpublished reports and bring you a report from Clinton Cho with some wonderful photos of the introductory workshop given by INNO’ON – LA ’OH at the University of Belize in Belmopan in April of 2019. If you look closely at some of the photos, you can see the image of the remarkable Komkom vase newly excavated from Baking Pot, Belize in 2016, which contains the longest known text found on a ceramic vessel, with some 202 glyphs! Also featured is a Maya Calendar tool, beautifully made from wood.

This workshop was taught by Jorge De Leon, and facilitated by Clinton Cho, with Dr. Pio Saqui, and Felicita Cantun. This is a continuation of the previously successful workshop facilitated through INNO’ON-LA ’OH in 2018.

In these challenging times, we are wishing all of our Maya colleagues and supporters well, and looking forward to a time in the near future when all of this will be behind us. We look forward to working together for a brighter future in which Maya cultures, languages, and communities are healthy and thriving. Thank you for all of your continued support through these challenging times.

Our event was successful and brought students and individuals from various non-governmental organizations in unity through the Maya culture experience, and they received the knowledge of writing and deciphering hieroglyphs. “Unidad a Través de la Experiencia Cultural Maya”: Escritura Maya y Calendáricos con INNO’ON – LA ’OH en la Universidad de Belice

Las cosas han estado inusualmente tranquilas para nosotros en MAM, ya que la pandemia nos ha obligado a posponer todas nuestras actividades hasta el próximo año. Este verano, profundizamos en el archivo de informes inéditos y les brindamos un informe de Clinton Cho, incluyendo algunas fotos maravillosas del taller introductorio impartido por INNO’ON – LA ‘OH en la Universidad de Belice, en Belmopán, en abril de 2019. En las fotos, puede verse imágenes del extraordinario Vaso de Komkom, excavado en Baking Pot, Belice, apenas en 2016 y que, ¡con unos 202 glifos! presenta el texto más largo que se conoce en un recipiente de cerámica. También se presenta una herramienta de Calendario Maya, bellamente hecha de madera.

Este taller fue impartido por Jorge De León y facilitado por Clinton Cho, con el Dr. Pio Saqui y Felicita Cantn. Esta es una continuación de un exitoso taller anterior, facilitado a través de INNO’ON-LA ’OH en 2018.

En estos desafiantes tiempos, deseamos lo mejor a todos nuestros colegas y seguidores mayas, y esperamos con ansias un momento en el futuro cercano cuando todo esto haya quedado atrás. Esperamos trabajar juntos por un futuro mejor, en el que las culturas, los idiomas y las comunidades mayas gocen de salud y prosperidad. En nombre de INNO’ON – LA OH, la asociación de estudiantes mayas, quisiera expresar nuestro sincero agradecimiento a los Mayas por el Antiguo Maya por su ayuda financiera para alojar nuestro Taller de Epigrafía 2019. El evento fue un éxito que unió a estudiantes y personas de diversas organizaciones no gubernamentales a través de experimentar la cultura maya, mediante el aprendizaje de la escritura y el desciframiento de los jeroglíficos.
