A New Curriculum—Teaching Maya History, Calendrics and Writing in Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala.

We are happy to report that we received many applications for our latest round of mini-grants! As we review the applications and make our final decisions, we wanted to continue to publish the reports from the good work of some of our previous recipients.

This month, we publish a report from Marina Rosales López and Mario Sebastián Caal Jucub, who led a colorful, introductory workshop last October on Maya writing and calendrics in Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. The workshop was designed for Q’eqchi’ y Poqomchi’ teachers and graduates of the Magisterio de Educación Infantil Bilingüe Intercultural. We are very grateful to be able to support the work of these dedicated teachers who are doing the important work of bringing a deeper appreciation and understanding of Maya history, writing, and calendrics into the national curriculum in Guatemala.

In our upcoming blog on April 19, we will be announcing the next recipients of this year’s mini-grants. Please stay tuned!

INFORME TALLER DE EPIGRAFÍA NIVEL INTRODUCTORIA
14 DE OCTUBRE DE 2016, COBÁN A.V.

I. Datos generales

Horario: a doble jornada (8:00 a 18:00 horas)

II. Introduction
In the framework of the mini-grants provided by MAM, this event was held in which 30 people participated among undergraduate teaching students and some teachers with the intention of strengthening their identity. It was developed as a full day event in two shifts, having a duration of 9 hours, where the subjects were the history of the script, the Mayan calendar and ancient Mayan writing, directed at beginners at an introductory level.

It was supported by departmental authorities, the departmental director of education, the director of the establishment, and some teachers.

III. Description of activities
The following is a schedule of activities:

October 14 (waqib’ Aj)

IV. Methodology
The methodology used was using slides prepared for each theme, individual and group exercises were done, and materials were printed to facilitate the development and exercise. They were enriched with examples presented by the facilitators and they creatively constructed texts from their own names.

We began with an invocation, which allowed us to interrelate the subject with spirituality. We reflected on the strengthening of their identity, and at the end, the teachers were responsible for the delivery of certificates to the participants.

In the interest of time, the refreshments and lunch were served in the classroom.

V. Conclusions
Being graduates of the teaching profession, the participants were inspired to include the contents of History, the Calendar and Ancient Writing within the current national curriculum in the country, and to apply this to their teaching work in the future.

They strengthened their identity, considering that all are of Q’eqchi ‘and Poqomchi’ Maya origin.

Thanks to MAM for the economic support provided, as it facilitated the printing of materials, recognition, food (refreshments and lunch), and teaching materials, among others. It is also a motivation for the participants in the various Congresos to be able to bring what they have learned to Mayan communities.

II.

  1. Hello, I was just curious about the glyphs posted on this date (March 10, 2017): 10 Ajaw 3 Kumk’u
Is the Kumk’u glyph in reference to the Mayan zodiac/month sign for July? and what is the meaning of the face next to it as well as the skull glyph next to the Ajaw?
Thanks in advance I appreciate it
