Note from the President: With this blog we mark the close of our 2015 grant season and turn our attention to the 2016 planning efforts for the Third International Congress of Maya Epigraphers, hosted and organized by the Fundación Proyecto Linguistico Francisco Marroquín, or PLFM, in Antigua, Guatemala. We are proud to say we supported thirty-five grass-roots workshops this year. We will try to put together a statistical overview of this year’s grants in a blog in the near future, with places and languages and numbers of students, etc., but for now, let us enjoy this second workshop by the team of K’anal Akpub’ and Ajpub’ García in Highland Chiapas near the Guatemala border (please see our blog 1 Ajaw 8 Sek, June 29, 2015 for the first workshop and a map). Again, my thanks to the foundation Mayas for Ancient Mayan, for continued support of the promotion of knowledge, with small financial contributions, to carry out and conduct these workshops with our Maya brothers and sisters.

Nota del presidente: Con este blog, marcamos el final de nuestra temporada de becas 2015 y dirigimos nuestra atención a los esfuerzos de planificación de 2016 para el Tercer Congreso Internacional de Epigrafistas Maya, alojados y organizadas por la Fundación Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín, o PLFM, en Antigua, Guatemala. Estamos orgullosos de decir que apoyamos treinta y cinco talleres este año. Vamos a tratar de armar un panorama estadístico de los lugares e idiomas y el número de estudiantes, etc., en un blog del futuro cercano, pero por ahora, vamos a disfrutar de este segundo taller por el equipo de K’anal Ajpub’ y Ajpub’ García en los Altos de Chiapas, cerca de la frontera Guatemala (consulte nuestro blog 1 Ajaw 8 Sek, 29 de junio de 2015 para el primer taller y un mapa). Informe del Ojer Maya Tz’ib’ y Calendario, 27-28 Octubre, 2015
Nuevamente mi agradecimiento a la fundación Maya Antiguo para los Mayas, en seguir apoyando a promover los conocimientos, con las pequeñas aportaciones económicas, para llevar acabo, la realización de estos talleres con nuestros hermanos mayas.
Certainly many people are beginning to give importance to ojer tz’ib, ancient writing, and are eager to continue working with it. Here is an example, the young people who attended these workshops, which are now from two communities, keen for this learning. We are certain that at this rate, in the future we will have successfully trained workshop leaders to further expand these workshops teaching people. For this reason, I am very grateful to you men and women of MAM, for this help. It truly is a great support to us, the Tojol-ab’ales.
To revive the knowledge of our ancestors, listening and learning with my fellow Tojola-ab’ales, provides moments of reflection and the motivation to continue in spite of the many provocations against us by many other Western cultures. So it is a pleasure for me that, through you the people of MAM, I am supporting my brothers and sisters.
These activities were carried out on October 27 and 28 in the community B’ahuitz Rosario (Place of the Hills), in the municipality of Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico, with the pupils and students of the Escuela Telesecundaria Emilio Rabasa Estebanell, and the community of Veracruz, also in the municipality of Las Margaritas, with students from different schools and with support for these workshops from the community authorities as well as parents.
Also a big thank you to our brother Ajpub Pablo García for his great collaboration, giving his time to come to support and promote the Ojer Maya Tz’ib’ (Maya epigraphy) in the communities of Tojol-ab’al speakers in Chiapas, continuing to share his knowledge and by doing so, raising awareness and self-reflection, regaining our identity as Maya speakers.
Events of October 27
Community of Rosario Bahuitz, municipality of Las Margaritas, following up the workshop of February 28, 2015, with the same student participants (please see our blog 1 Ajaw 8 Sek, June 29, 2015).
This time working with the Mayan Calendar, to meet our objective we used the teaching material “The Maya Calendars Haab’, Tzolk’in and Long Count” as teaching aids for young Maya Tojol-ab’ales, using tools from our mother language as well as Castilian to achieve greater understanding and subsequently to count the days in the calendar.
In the first place it was necessary to know Maya numbering, the basic signs as a short introduction, then the names and appearances of the calendar days.

As said, for a better understanding of the names of the days of the Tzolk’in (Cholq’iij) calendar, it was necessary to translate the names to Maya Tojol-ab’al.
After learning the days, as an exercise the students began to read the days in the calendar.
Working the exercise gave results like this, as presented by the youths of the community of Rosario Bahuitz.
Events of October 28
Place: Community of Veracruz, Municipio of Las Margaritas, Chiapas
One of the objectives with this group of young people was that they know the ways of our ancestral writing so that later they can write names of animals, objects, places, or any other information with the Maya writing, and above all to raise their awareness and to claim it as their own.
In this activity we used as course material “OjerMayaTz’ib’, Ancient Writing”, to help students understand and to facilitate their work. The following points were developed: the Mesoamerican cosmology and territorial spaces, which currently housethe Mayan cities. Likewise, they were presented the dynamics of the current Mayan languages and linguistic branches that the Mayan languages come from, and as a main theme, the syllabary and the different forms of writing, logograms that represent complete words, word formation, how to form sounds nonexistent in the syllabary, signs that can be easily confused,etc.
Present during the workshop were young people from different educational institutions in the region, women and men, all speakers of Maya Tojol-ab’al. The following activities are presented here.

After learning the history of the Maya languages and the writing on some of the stelae that were presented, and the reading of syllabograms, and the forms of writing, they began the exercise of writing names that each student wrote with the help of the syllabary.

And so was concluded the teaching of Ancient Maya Writing (Maya Epigraphy) and the calendar in two communities in the municipality of Las Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico.

MAYAS FOR ANCIENT MAYAN
Segura de que mucha gente están empezando a darle importancia a ojer tz’ib, escritura antigua, con muchas ganas de seguir trabajando. Hay aquí el ejemplo con los jóvenes que asistieron a estos talleres, que ahora son dos comunidades, muy interesados para estos aprendizajes, segura de que a este pasó lograremos que el día de mañana tendremos a personas capacitados para ampliar más la enseñanza del dicho taller. Por este motivo, me encuentro muy agradecida hacía con ustedes señores del MAM, por esta ayuda, que verdaderamente es de gran apoyo para nosotros los y las Tojol-ab’ales.
Volver a revivir, escuchar y aprender, los conocimientos de nuestros ancestros junto con mis hermanos Tojola-ab’ales, son momentos de reflexión y motivación para seguir, ante tantos disturbios que provocan las otras culturas occidentales, por eso es un gusto para mí que a través de ustedes estoy apoyando a mis hermanos.
Estas actividades se llevaron a cabo el 27 y 28 de octubre en las comunidades Rosario B’ahuitz (Lugar de los Cerros), municipio de las Margaritas Chiapas, México. Con las alumnas y alumnos de la Escuela Telesecundaria Emilio Rabasa Estebanell, y la comunidad Veracruz, municipio de Margaritas, con alumnos de diferentes escuelas y con un gran apoyo de las autoridades, así como de padres de familia, para su realización de estos talleres.
También mi gran agradecimiento para nuestro hermano Ajpub Pablo García, por su gran colaboración, apartando tiempo para venir a apoyar e impulsar la el Ojer Maya’ Tz’ib’ (epigrafía Maya) en las comunidades de hablantes Tojol-ab’ales de Chiapas, y seguir compartiendo sus saberes, así mismo haciendo concientizar y reflexionar, para retomar nuestra identidad como hablantes mayas.
Actividad Día 27 de octubre
Comunidad Rosario Bahuitz, Municipio de las Margaritas, dando seguimiento el taller con los mismos alumnos participantes de 28 de febrero 2015 (consulte nuestro blog 1 Ajaw 8 Sek, 29 de junio 2015).
Trabajando esta ocasión con el calendario Maya, para cumplir con el objetivo fue necesario utilizar el material “Los calendarios mayas Haab’, Tzolk’in y Cuenta Larga” como apoyo para el aprendizaje de los jóvenes Mayas Tojol-ab’ales, utilizando estrategias desde el idioma materno y Castellano, para poder lograr un mayor entendimiento y posteriormente contar los días del calendario.
Como primer punto fue necesario conocer la numeración Maya de los signos básicos como una pequeña introducción, posteriormente los nombres y rostros de los días del calendario presentado por Ajpub García.

Como dicho anteriormente, para una buena comprensión hacía los nombres de los días del calendario Tzolk’in “cholq’iij”, fue necesario hacer una traducción en Maya Tojol-ab’al.
Una vez conociendo los días, como ejercicio los jóvenes empezaron a leer y completar los días en este calendario.
Quedando el ejercicio, como resultado de esta manera. Esto fue la presentación de las actividades con los jóvenes de la comunidad Rosario Bahuitz.
Actividad Día 28 de octubre
Lugar: comunidad Veracruz, municipio de las Margaritas Chiapas
Uno de los objetivos con este grupo de Jóvenes es que conozcan las formas de escritura de nuestro ancestrales, para que después puedan escribir nombres, de animales de objetos, lugares, o algún otro tipo de información con las con la escritura Maya y sobre todo concientizarlos en le reivindicación de la misma.
En esta actividad utilizamos como material de apoyo ¨Curso del Ojer Maya’ Tz’ib’, Escritura Antigua¨, para que los alumnos le facilite comprender y trabajar. Los puntos desarrollados fueron los siguientes: se les habló sobre los espacios cosmogónicos y territoriales mesoamericana donde actualmente se encuentran las ciudades mayas. De la misma manera, se les presentó la dinámica de los idiomas mayas actuales y rama lingüística donde provienen los idiomas mayas y como tema principal el silabario y las diferentes formas de escritura, logogramas que representan palabras completas, formación de palabras, cómo formar sonidos inexistentes en el silabario, signos que pueden ser confundibles, etc.
Durante el taller estuvieron presente jóvenes de diferentes instituciones educativas de la región, conformadas en mujeres y hombres, todos ellos hablantes Maya Tojol-ab’ales. A continuación se presenta las actividades realizadas.
Aquí podemos ver el alumno revisando minuciosamente el silabario.
Una vez conociendo las historias de los idiomas Mayas y la escritura de algunas estelas que se les fueron presentadas, y la lectura del silabogramas, y las formas de escrituras, se dio el inicio de los ejercicios en la escritura de nombres, donde cada uno de los jóvenes escribió con la ayuda del silabario.

Algunos resultados.
El alumno muy emocionado con la escritura con los silabarios y compartiendo la importancia para él retomar estos tipos de conocimiento.

De esta manera se concluyó la enseñanza del Ojer Maya Ts’ib’ “Epigrafía Maya” y calendario en las dos comunidades del municipio de Las Margaritas, Chiapas, México.
