Given the current circumstances surrounding the global Coronavirus pandemic, it is with a heavy heart that I must announce the postponement of the Fifth International Congreso on Ancient Maya Writing— Ojer Maya’ Tz’ib’—which was scheduled for August 18-21 of this year. The Congreso Planning Committee has agreed to postpone the event until August of 2021, and we at MAM have decided that, in order to protect our Maya colleagues and communities, we will also be canceling this years mini-grant program.

Here is the notification posted by the Congreso Organizing Team:

In solidarity with humanity, which is suffering the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, we informed our Maya sisters and brothers from different towns in Mesoamerica, who have participated in our workshops and conferences, that the Fifth International Congreso on Ojer Maya’ Tz’ib’ in 2020 has been suspended. In addition, the mini-grant workshops in Maya communities have been canceled.

Further, we report that the date of the event will be transferred to be carried out in the same place and date in 2021.

We hope we will continue to have your support and your dedication, especially as we emerge from this crisis and move into next year with a resounding affirmation to continue our work of supporting our Maya colleagues in their efforts to reconnect to their own history.

Dadas las circunstancias actuales en torno a la pandemia mundial de Coronavirus, es con gran pesar que debo anunciar el aplazamiento del Quinto Congreso Internacional sobre Escritura Maya Antigua, Ojer Maya’ Tz’ib’, que se había programado para el 18-21 de agosto de este año. El Comité de Planificación del Congreso acordó posponer el evento hasta agosto de 2021, y nosotros en MAM hemos decidido que, para proteger a nuestros colegas y comunidades mayas, también cancelaremos el programa de minibecas de este año.

Aquí está la notificación publicada por el Equipo Organizador del Congreso:

En solidaridad con la humanidad, que a nivel mundial está sufriendo las consecuencias de la pandemia COVID-19, informamos a nuestras hermanas y hermanos mayas de los diferentes pueblos de Mesoamérica, que han participado en nuestros talleres, congresos y conferencias, que se suspende la realización del 5º Congreso Internacional de Ojer Maya’ Tz’ib’, 2020. También se cancela la concesión de minibecas para talleres en comunidades mayas.

Asimismo, informamos que, el Congreso se celebrará en el mismo lugar y en las mismas fechas el año próximo (2021).

Agradecemos profundamente a quienes nos apoyan y hacen posible el desarrollo de dichos congresos, talleres y conferencias, así como el financiamiento de minibecas:

A todos aquellos que han donado a nuestra causa para el próximo Congreso y para las minibecas, les informamos que habremos de conservar sus donaciones en fideicomiso para el próximo año, o tan pronto como el desarrollo de las cosas nos permita enviar de forma segura un llamada a nuestro próximo programa de minibecas. Esperamos seguir contando con su apoyo y dedicación, especialmente a medida que vayamos saliendo de esta crisis y avancemos hacia el próximo año, con una afirmación inequívoca de continuar con nuestra labor de apoyar a nuestros colegas mayas en sus esfuerzos por reconectarse con su propia historia.
